Guide

Fitness apps over 40: which type fits you?

There is no single best fitness app after 40. The best choice is the type that covers what you need most: a strength plan, classes to follow, a running plan, a coach or data from a wearable. Official guidelines ask adults for strength training on at least two days a week plus 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity, so whatever you pick should cover strength.

What matters from 40

Five things the evidence says an app should cover.

Strength on two or more days

US and WHO guidelines ask adults for muscle-strengthening work for all major muscle groups on at least two days a week.

WHO guidelines 2020

Strength before size

In a review of studies, strength fell two to five times faster with age than muscle mass, and low strength was the more consistent risk marker.

Mitchell et al. 2012

A plan that progresses

The NSCA position statement calls resistance training a powerful intervention against the loss of strength and muscle in older adults, with programmes that progress over time.

NSCA 2019

Balance later in life

From 65, WHO recommends varied activity with balance and strength on three or more days a week. The UK guidelines note that muscle and bone decline from around 50.

Where huuman fits

huuman is a coaching app with an AI coach.

We make huuman, so we do not rank it in this guide. Here is where it fits, so you can judge for yourself.

What it is: An iPhone app whose AI coach plans strength, cardio, nutrition, sleep and recovery in one weekly plan and adapts it to your week. It reads your Apple Health data.

Who it suits: Adults from 35 on who want strength training with every set, rep and weight planned for them, and one plan instead of several apps.

Choose another type if: you want follow-along video classes, a human coach, an Android app, or a plan built only around running.

$22.99 a month or $179.99 a year with 7 days free (US App Store, 14 October 2026).

huuman app: a 12-week plan and a strength session

Questions

Short answers.

What is the best fitness app for over 40?

There is no single best one. Pick the type that covers your main need: a strength plan to get stronger, classes for guidance at home, a running plan for endurance, or a coaching app if you want a plan that adapts to you. Whatever you choose should include strength training on at least two days a week.

Which fitness apps are made for women over 40 or 50?

Some apps target midlife directly: Menovation is built for perimenopause and menopause, Over Fifty Fitness for people over 50, LES MILLS+ lists perimenopause and menopause workouts, and Trainwell's trainers include menopause specialists.

Do I need a smartwatch?

No. Most apps in this guide work with your phone alone. Wearable apps such as WHOOP, Oura and Garmin Connect need their own device; many others can read watch data if you have one.

Are free fitness apps good enough?

Free apps such as Nike Training Club and Nike Run Club, and the free versions of Hevy and Strong, cover classes, runs and training logs. What they usually do not do is plan your progression for you.

Should I choose an app or a personal coach?

Apps with a one-to-one human coach cost much more: Trainwell lists $149 a month and Future Pro $199 a month, while most app subscriptions in this guide cost $10 to $30 a month.

Which apps work in the UK?

Most apps here are in the UK App Store. Future Pro, Bold and SilverSneakers GO are not. The NHS apps Couch to 5K and Active 10 are free UK options for getting started with running and walking.

Method and sources

How we compared.

Data. Every fact comes from the app's US App Store listing or the maker's own website, read on 14 October 2026. Ratings, prices and trials change often, so check the store before you subscribe.

Prices. We show the standard plan where the listing or the maker states it. Otherwise we show the lowest monthly and yearly price in the App Store list, marked "from", because stores also list older and discounted prices. US prices are before tax.

Order. Inside each type, apps appear by their number of US App Store ratings. That says how widely an app is used, not how good it is for you.

Independence. No app paid to appear here and there are no affiliate links. huuman publishes this guide and also makes an app; it is described separately and not ranked.
